Most of the small tax exempt organizations having annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less file 990-N to satisfy their annual reporting requirement. Organization can also file Form 990-EZ or Nonprofit tax Form 990 voluntarily.

Note - There is no option to file 990-N by paper. Form 990-N should be filed electronically.

When Is The Due Date To File e-Postcard?

The due date to File 990-N is by the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the tax year.

For example, if your tax year ends on December 31, the due date to file e-Postcard is May 15. Now if the due date falls on a legal holiday, Saturday or Sunday, then you need to file on the next business day.

If you are following fiscal year, then the deadline for filing your Form 990-N would be on the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the tax year. For example if your tax year ends on August 31, then the due date to file your e-Postcard will be January 15th.

Accounting Periods Of Form 990-N (e-Postcard)

There are three accounting periods:

  • Calendar Year
    The calendar year accounting period starts on January 1 and ends on December 31.
  • Fiscal Year
    The fiscal year of an organization consists of twelve consecutive months ending on the last day of any month, except December

  • Confirmation If Gross Receipts Of The Organization is $50,000 Or Less.
  • Name & Address of The Principal Officer – This usually consists of the details of the vice president, president, treasurer or secretary who are specified in the bylaws of the organization.
  • Written Statement If Organization Is Going Out of Business.

What Happens If I file e-Postcard Late?

The IRS will send a reminder notice if you don’t file your e-Postcard on time, but you won’t have to pay a penalty for late filing. But, if your organization fails to file the Form 990-N for three consecutive years, then it will automatically lose the tax-exempt status.
